I spent weeks investigating and pouring my passion into this story. I pitched the idea after listening back through the scanner traffic from the shooting and watching the coverage of it go cold.
I found dozens of leads and spent countless hours reviewing bodycam video from other incidents with IMPD. The story underwent multiple welcomed reviews before publishing.
'Reprehensible, appalling, and criminal' | Indiana police respond to fatal beating of Tyre Nichols
Current
This is an example of a current and local angle to a national story — the tragic, fatal beating of Tyre Nichols. One agency said it best, stating police leaders "cannot be silent." This story intends to give them the opportunity to have their voices and responses heard.

Local News
This was a multi-day project that involved looking at hundreds of stories from the past year and compiling data on page views and social media engagement to identify the stories our viewers were the most interested in.
Through that data gathering, I found I had written many of the year's top stories — a boy's body found in a suitcase in April, Indiana women suing Netflix and tornadoes in May, two officers being killed a month apart and coverage on the Indiana abortion ban, to name a few.

I was the first to uncover the highly sought-after details of a controversial bill that ultimately passed during a special session in Indiana. This story describes broke down what was included in the bill and how it would affect Hoosiers.

Crime
In April 2022, I wrote a story about an unidentified boy's body being found in rural Indiana. The boy remained unidentified until six months later when police named the boy and those accused in his murders — his mom and her friend.
Court documents and social media scouring provided a deep, disturbing look at how the mother spent months posting about her son being possessed before he was found dead.

This story details a new strategy the Indianapolis Public Library announced it was taking in the wake of major fallout over its board selecting an outside candidate for CEO instead of its interim leader Nichelle Hayes. The decision prompted protests and the candidate to turn down the job.
